LAGOS, (CAJ News) - THE Nigerian government has financially rewarded the country's sports teams for their exploits in recent tournaments.
Among these are the Under 17 men's football team which finished second in the just-ended CAF Youth Championships.
Each player received N500 000 (US$3 215) while the coach received N1 million (US$6 430).
The assistant coaches were rewarded N750 000 and the team doctor N300 000.
The juniors, by winning silver in Morocco, qualified for the World Youth Championship scheduled to take place in United Arab Emirates in October.
There were cash donations for the national U-18 athletics team which performed well at a continental track and field meet.
Gold medallists and technical officials carting home with N500 000 each. Silver medal winner got N400 and and bronze medallists N300000.
The U-18 athletes topped the medals table in the recently concluded inaugural Africa Athletics Championship in Warri, Delta State.
President Goodluck Jonathan, who announced the rewards, said he was delighted at the performance of the two teams.
He told them to keep the Nigerian flag flying and make the country proud in upcoming tournaments.
“We must keep doing the right things, by the grace of God, we will keep winning.
"I urge you (sportspersons) to be disciplined to have successful career and keep bringing glory to your families and country,” he added.
